We are aware that the Educational Testing Service (ETS) has updated their scoring system beginning January 21, 2026. You can learn more about the changes on the ETS website. To ease the transition into the new scoring system, ETS will report both scoring formats (0–120 and 1–6) side-by-side for two years, through January 2028.
During the transition period:
- Applicants to our Visiting Student Programs and UC Berkeley Summer Sessions may continue to submit TOEFL scores without hesitation.
- We will continue to evaluate TOEFL results using the previous scoring formats.
- Visiting Student Programs: minimum score of 90
- UC Berkeley Summer Sessions: minimum score of 80
- If you take the TOEFL on or after January 21, 2026, your score report will include both the 0–120 and 1–6 scale scores.
You do not need to convert scores or provide any explanations. Our Admissions team will review the ETS score reports and apply the appropriate evaluation.
