Letters and Science W1: Exploring the Liberal Arts is a two-unit summer online course that provides an introduction to the intellectual landscape of the College of Letters & Science. This course gives you a head start on your education and helps build your connections with both students and professors. You will meet guest speakers and faculty members from over twenty departments who will deliver mini-lectures on fascinating topics ranging from earthquakes, the sense of touch, the root causes of poverty, and the philosophy of science. Taking L&S W1 in the summer will give you the best possible start on your education and make the most of your time at Berkeley by helping you discover your passion.
If you are an incoming freshman, you must opt-in to the Freshman Edge program to enroll in L&S W1: Exploring the Liberal Arts or other class offerings.
- On your CalCentral Tasks list (on My Dashboard), locate the “Opt-Into Freshman Edge” task and click “Accept/Join.”
- Wait for the My Academics page of CalCentral to update with your Summer Enrollment card. Once updated, you will see that your Class Enrollment panel has the option to enroll in classes for Summer 2025. This process can take up to 12 hours.
- Make sure the term Summer 2025 is selected at the toggle switch at the top of the enrollment panel. Click on the Choose classes hyperlink under "4. Class Enrollment.”
- Search for L&S W1 (or other class offerings) by class number and select a discussion section.
- Enroll in the class from your cart by selecting the checkbox next to the class and clicking on the "Enroll” button. Make sure you complete the process; you will know that you're enrolled when you are on a page that lists L&S W1, and it has a green checkmark next to it.
