The University's Gender Recognition and Lived Name (GRLN) policy ensures that all students, employees, alumni, and affiliates are identified by their accurate gender identity and lived name on university-issued identification documents and in UC’s information systems.
Providing a lived name on your application
On your application, you will have the option to provide a lived name (sometimes also referred to as a preferred name) along with your legal name. We collect your legal name on the application for federal tax and/or visa purposes. If you provide a lived name, all UC information systems will display this name once your application has been processed, including your student ID (Cal 1 Card). University staff and faculty will not have access to your legal name unless their job requires it, e.g. for visa purposes for international students.
Ordering a transcript with your lived or legal name
Visiting students using a lived name who require their transcript to be issued with their legal name in order to transfer their Summer Sessions credits back to their home university can select to have their transcript issued using their legal name. This selection can be made when ordering the transcript through the Parchment website, the University's official partner issuing transcripts.
Please note that your selection cannot be changed once your order has been placed. If you ordered a transcript with your lived name, but you require a transcript with your legal name instead, you will need to place a new transcript order.
