All students are required to have health or medical insurance for Summer Sessions.
International students must have health insurance for the entire time they are in the U.S. Summer Sessions does not offer health insurance, so you must arrange coverage before you arrive in Berkeley.
What your plan must cover
Your health insurance policy should meet all of the following requirements:
- Provide at least $50,000 (USD) in coverage for each accident or illness
- Have a deductible of $500 or less
- Cover at least 75% of hospital and physician costs
- Cover you from the time you leave your current residence until the day you plan to return
Medical care in the U.S. can be very expensive. Hospital costs can average $4,000 to $5,000 per day, so having adequate coverage is essential.
How to enroll
You may purchase medical insurance on your own before traveling to Berkeley. If you are unable to buy insurance before leaving home, you can find information about health insurance enrollment on the UHS website.
J-1 student requirements
J-1 students are required, as a condition of their visa status, to maintain a higher level of health insurance coverage beginning on the day they are admitted to the U.S. For more information about J-1 health insurance requirements, see Health Insurance Requirements for J-1/J-2 Visitors.
