The Pass/No Pass (P/NP) grading option was designed to encourage students to explore new academic areas or take challenging, far-ranging courses without undue concern about grades. Passed grades require a level of performance at least equal to a letter grade of C- or better. Neither P nor NP grades affect the UC grade point average. You may choose to add the option to take a class Pass/No Pass when adding a course. For additional information about grading options, please visit our website here.
- Please note, it is not common but there are some courses that do not allow for pass/no pass as an option. We highly recommend that before enrolling in a class that students confirm whether there are any grading option change restrictions associated. You can find details about each course listed in the UC Berkeley Academic Guide.
- Consider the deadlines to when you will be able to Change Grading Option
VISITING STUDENTS: If you are a visiting student planning to transfer credit, please check if your home institution will accept pass/no pass. Most institutions will NOT accept classes graded as pass/no pass for transfer credit.
